CALAMITY JANE High on the Hog Ranch, raising Cain I crossed a bullwhackin’ woman courtin’ no restrain A wide-open country girl born on the dusty plain 6 feet tall, standing like a wreck of a train Leather skin brown as the arid terrain I long to persuade Miss Martha Jane With a bottle of Rye I started my campaign “You are courting Calamity,” she explained “Since I was knee-high, I could out ride, out shoot, out drink any man” She was dissolute, devilish, with a touch of insane “I’ve got wanderlust honey and I can’t be tamed” From Bottle Bottoms we caught that midnight train Roosters crowed in morning rain Down the muddy trail I did forfeit my claim But my heart remains with Calamity Jane © 2013 D. San Antone 03:10
In a little cantina by the river in San Antone Walked in the only seniorita who could offer this heart a home I had prayed for respite When I thought it would not come at all She took my hand and asked if I was alone Somehow tequila proceeded before my eyes open My mind rolled again To a little cafe between Lake Mead and the Altar run Dusty circles we spun in the new Neon With your hand in mine I’m free of this time She took my name before the desert sun Somehow tequila proceeded before my eyes open My mind rolled again RED dust RED dust RED dust In a little bodega I made her when the water rushed her to my door A white cotton dress was all she wore I had prayed for respite When I thought it would not come at all She came took my love and gave me more Soon the blossom proceeded to open My mind rolled again © 2009 D. All Ways 03:32
All Ways Today your fiery sun touched softly Breeze aloft and hardly From darkness, you brought day Your love is all ways There is something we’ve got to say and we throw our arms down Take the fingers from ears taste the bitter tears Am/ C/ G/ D Am/ C / E We long to know you Embrace adore you Sorrow hangs our souls in debt We cast away pulling nothing in our net Precious seed has not sprouted yet Thunderous deeds have got us far as we can get We make war on all living things Sing empty verses and keep our hands clean We have failed to keep our brother from harm Or carry our sister in true loving arms So let your tempest rain let it storm our life May you wash us from high and blow away our lies © 2013 D. Daniel “Mudcat” Dudeck’s latest release, You Better Mind, finds him and his Atlanta-based band cooking up another soulful roots-music stew. With raspy vocal, rangy slide guitar, and sly charm, Dudeck creates a lively atmosphere that hovers over each song on the album.
When Mama’s Happy and Calamity Jane briskly shuffle along, richly augmented by the horn section (former B.B. King horn player Lil’ Joe Burton on trombone, Daryl Dunn on saxophone, and Mico Bowles on trumpet), the latter featuring bassist, Shannon Kirk trading playful vocals with Dudeck. Gone Peaches shimmies smartly between rhythms, as does the Tex-Mex flavored San Antone. The lone cover, the traditional You Better Mind-all other songs written by Dudeck-also gets a rousing horn-accented treatment, with a hill country fife and drum-style breakdown provided by David “Snave” Evans and Eskil Wetterqvist, respectively.
Spitting in the Eye of the Devil belies its title; rather than fiery and defiant, it’s actually laid-back and mournful, with solo turns from Dudeck, Burton, and Chad Mason on keys. Dudeck’s slide playing shimmers warmly on this record, adding to the moodiness of Falling and Commodicide, a lament on careless consumption in modern times that quotes Dust My Broom among references to child labor, fracking, and pollution.
All Ways continues in this socially conscious vein, asking for awareness and cleansing from above. Yet even the message songs have beats you can dance to, rendering Mudcat’s You Better Mind an ultimately buoyant, goodtime affair.

'You Better Mind' is a traditional song in the public domain.
